SeeInMe Helps Caregivers

Hi, I’m Risa Stein, clinical psychologist, mother, daughter, granddaughter, and founder of SeeInMe.

When my son was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome at age nine, I began sharing his story with each new teacher, clinician, therapist, and caregiver. I tried to explain the implications of his disorder beyond the tics and what it meant for effectively interacting with him. Sometimes my messages stuck, but often they did not.

Years later, I watched my father in Georgia attempt to coordinate care for his father, who had Alzheimer’s disease and lived in New Jersey. From hundreds of miles away, he tried to piece together phone calls and updates from multiple providers to understand what was changing and what my grandfather needed.

In my professional capacity in hospital settings, I saw the same challenge from the clinical side. While teams of clinicians discussed symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments, my role was to keep the patient at the center, ensuring their psychological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral needs factored into the care plan.

In 2013, a medical emergency left me hospitalized for two weeks, followed by significant rehabilitation. I felt how reassuring personalized care can be and how diminishing it feels to be treated like a case study rather than a human being.

My human-centered design work taught me that each person in a complex care network - care recipient, family member, direct care provider, administrator, operator, and payer – hold their own insights and perspective. Each one constitutes a valuable piece of the care picture. SeeInMe grew from these experiences and one belief: efficiency and humanity should not be competing priorities.
